Paddy Farms damaged by heavy Hail Storm

Many paddy farms were destroyed by heavy hail that hit ManKyawt – Mansan village in the Mantong area on October 29th 2011.

“A family yields between two to three hundreds of baskets of rice annually. I’m sure this year we will probably get the same amount, but as they were going to harvest, the heavy hail storm came and beat our entire paddy. The villagers couldn’t do anything they just cried in despair” said a local paddy farmer.
The villagers now face welfare problems, some have already borrowed money before their paddy yield, and they are unable pay back their debts.  There are over one hundreds families in Mankyawt- Mansan village and they depend on the paddy farms more than the tea farms. Even though it rained in the other villages their crops were not destroyed.
Mantoung Township became one of the Ta’ang administration regions after the 2010 election. The villagers are still not getting help from NGOs or any authorities.
